As dedicated campers, we are familiar with the desire for more space in a motorhome or caravan at first hand. Gaining space means gaining relaxation and comfort – but only if the additional space gained does not restrict you in any other way. What does that mean?
Conventionally, space is gained by acquiring a larger vehicle. This compromise solution, however, dampens the euphoria when it comes to questions such as the right driving licence, maximum travel speed or suitable parking spaces. With the increasing electrification of vehicles, the size/weight-to-range ratio is also a decisive selection criterion.
Therefore, it was clear to us from the outset that we had to take a different, more innovative approach. The core idea, an extendable space expansion module combines the advantages of a small base vehicle when driving with the space of a large recreational vehicle when parking. In doing so,
it was crucial for us to maintain the highest standards and not to compromise on reliability, water tightness, weight or ease of use. A broad set of requirements, that was technically evaluated, resulted in the development specifications that accompanied us and our partners throughout the entire development process.
We are convinced that we have created a great solution that has the potential to shape the recreational vehicle industry. But whether we succeed in doing so is up to you. See for yourself what our solution has to offer and put us to the test:
Vario Chain® Drive (VCD)
The technology behind it
Our Vario Chain® Technology makes it possible for the first time to use a strong and at the same time lightweight push-pull chain drive solution in the automotive sector. Thanks to a new design and an innovative material mix of reinforced plastic and aluminium, we have created a unique weight-performance ratio.
The VCD system’s two-part chain feeding technology opens up a whole new range of solutions. The unique design with a synchronous drive on the front of both chain halves allows you to reach more targets than before – higher and further. We have fully exploited the installation space to achieve what is unattainable for other linear actuators – compact dimensions when retracted, combined with a high stroke length.

Minimal installation space
The VCD system requires only a minimum of space thanks to the modified arrangement of the drive system (front-mounted instead of the usual side-mounted in push-pull chain drives). It enables a uniquely flat design and opens up new application possibilities, such as use as the drive system for the space extension modules.
High performance level
As the two halves of the chain hook into each other during movement, we achieve a high level of buckling stability in the system, even over longer lifting distances. This ensures that lightweight materials can be used and dynamic shocks can be better compensated at the same time. Advantages that come into their full effect when used as a drive for the Space Extension Module (SEM) – the chains are prevented from buckling in the event of shocks that occur when travelling on uneven road surfaces (potholes).
Easy installation and high level of stability
The VCD enables simplified, one-sided accessibility during installation and maintenance. This significantly reduces the installation effort and enables installation in confined spaces. The reduction to the essentials also ensures a high level of failure stability.
Precise and sensitive control
We use a brushless DC motor (BLDC) as the drive, which can control the VCD with maximum precision. The precise control predestines the system for applications that require synchronous control. In the case of the space extension module, two motors are used in the light version and four motors in the heavy version, which are synchronised.
Reliable failover
In reality, it is not possible to rule out errors 100% at all times and in all situations – we know this and have considered it one step further.
In exceptional situations, e.g. if the power supply fails, the vario chain drive® system can be reversed manually without the need for costly conversion work. For this purpose, we have developed a gas pressure-operated emergency clutch which disconnects the motor from the drive system when activated, thus enabling manual actuation. If the pressure is subsequently released from the system, the frictional connection between the motor and actuator is automatically re-established. This means that the operator retains control even in emergency situations and is not dependent on external help.
KEY Components

VCD unit
With optionally one or two motor/clutch combinations depending on the overall size of the expandable module
Control unit
In the basic version with toggle switch. Switch has several functions (In-/Out Movement, Training Mode, Service Mode).
In advanced version with Bluetooth/App control
CAN-Bus
Prepared for the integration of the space extension module into the native vehicle management system
Roller bearings
With horizontal adjustment device
Gasket guide rail
In 90° option or advanced 360° bent design
Easy installation and maintenance
The installation of the system in the factory was taken into account during the design phase. The drive system is suitable for assembly with one mechanic and facilitates a short cycle time.
As the seal is permanently exposed to environmental influences, regular inspection is recommended. The slide box can be retracted further into the vehicle (service mode) for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the seal can be performed. Complex conversion work is not required.
